| Exceptional, Radiates Love for Dogs & Their People, November 17, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Rachel Smith |
Every once in a while a book comes along that changes how we think about things. Dog Quirks is just such a book. Hoover's explanations and recommendations make perfect sense, as in 'why didn't we think of that before?!' She shows us how to figure out what's wrong with our dogs with behavior problems, and what's out of balance in our relationships with them. She shows us what dogs need from us and offers simple solutions to problems she wants us to think about, paradoxically, in a complex way.
There's nothing trite about Dog Quirks. It's philosophical, the case studies are moving, and she makes strong statements about dogs with behavior problems and their families. At it's heart, Dog Quirks is there to help us help the dogs we love. It radiates helpfulness and love for dogs and their people. |

| Destined to Be a Classic, October 21, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Pat Jenkins, PhD |
Dog Quirks is original, amazing, destined to be a classic. I've seen other authors blend theory with clinical practice issues and this book gets it right. The second section, All That Matters, is particularly well-done. The issues covered are familiar to all the helping professions. I've not seen them laid out with such clarity before. I’m in a helping profession and this section had me appreciating anew why our fundamental values and principles have to be upheld. I found myself saying yes, yes, yes! The author nailed it. Even better, the cases are a beautiful mix of simple to complex, ensuring a wide range of readers will benefit from the book. The interventions are simple, though as the author says, we have to understand our dogs first, before we can select the right combination of interventions.
I especially appreciate that the author doesn't let the reader slip into emotionality over issues that must be viewed objectively, such as electronic collars, choke and prong collars, alpha rolls, squirt bottles. Her family therapy training serves her well in this regard.
It's good to see it getting the recognition it deserves and already helping families in the U.S. and throughout the world. |

Fantastic Book from a True Expert, October 1, 2010
By Kathy Diamond Davis, Oklahoma City, OK USA
This is one of the best books of its type that I have ever read. It is thorough, it is very knowledgeable, and it is balanced.
The author is an expert at counseling people and at handling dogs in a huge variety of situations. She recommends that you deal with a professional with your dog if you can find a good one. But she recognizes that is often not possible. So, much of the information in this book can help you solve the problems yourself.
She also includes many, many references, some books and articles, and many that are free online. This book is truly packed with great information.

| A true understanding of why dogs do what they do, September 18, 2010 |
By Cherie Miller, Wisdom Creek Press, LLC (Georgia)
Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions is a book for the professionals in the crowd. If you're a dog trainer, a veterinarian, or a dog behavioral therapist, this book is for you. There is a lot of theory in the first half of the book, which grounds the practical solutions in the last half of the book.
There are case studies, highlighting several common dog issues, such as difficulty housebreaking, separation anxiety, inappropriate eating habits, or aggressiveness with visitors. All of them have a solution, dear dog owners, but it's going to take smarts, time and intentionality, according to Ms. Hoover.
A surprising note when you read the case studies (which I found very helpful to illustrate the issues AND the solutions) was that so many times the dog's issues were really human/owner problems. Many times a dog is suffering from being mishandled from the beginning.
There's also a great chapter in here on how to socialize puppies from eight to twelve weeks that would be a valuable resource for new puppy owners.
This is probably not a book for the newbie dog owner who's wanting simple solutions to behavior problems. But, if you're truly interested in the behavioral theory BEHIND the problems and are willing to devote concentrated time, it seemed like every dog quirk has a solution. |
