"I really like Lynn Hoover’s approach and common sense ideas in this book, and her use of case studies to make her points. I think readers will get a lot out of seeing examples of the points she is making about real-life situations

Hoover really gets to the heart of recognizing behavior problems as miscommunication between species. She identifies how fear and anxiety factor into many of the behavior problems we deal with. The understanding of the need to alter the animal's environment and the owner's interactions so as to not trigger or give pets the ability to engage in problem behaviors is essential to therapy, and she states this strongly in several areas of the book. She also emphasizes redirection to more appropriate behaviors and the principles of positive reinforcement.

Under "Who Qualifies", my basic tenet is the veterinarian needs to be involved at the outset to rule out medical issues and then make the proper referral. It should be the veterinarian who coordinates this. I think the way Hoover represents the veterinarian's role is accurate and honest. She makes a point to stress the need for veterinary evaluation of problems and also defers to the veterinarian when it comes to the use of medications. However, she rightly states that it is up to pet’s owners to educate themselves in order to best be involved in the decision making process.

I, of course, agree with Hoover’s position on the fallacy of dominance theory.

Hoover ’s passion comes across to the reader. I hope the book sells well. It can only hope to advance the cause of positive dog training and encourage people to get help when it comes to more problematic behaviors."

“I really like the book and want people to read it. Lynn Hoover is a fine writer. Her work always has an immediacy andDanibk personalismso the reader feels they’re right there in the room. I love Section Two, “All That Matters”. So much wisdom and insight in those chapters. I like the “Case Studies” a lot. Lynn opens a window for the reader into her philosophy, methodology, and style. I like the idea of the “Behavior Cache” --- brief essays on assorted important but often little-discussed topics, along with excellent references for readers who want to know more.”

“Reading this book was like sitting down with a dear friend. The advice is genuine and after completing it, you feel sad that it’s over...The true measure of a book’s worth is, simply, did it make you think after reading it. Lynn makes one think, and it has not been since Clothier’s Bones that I was moved by case studies. Great job, Lynn.”

“ Lynn's explanations of dog behavior and solutions in the "Case Histories" section are an education for anyone aloffbkaglooking for realistic and reliable solutions for "dog quirks," as she so charmingly categorizes dog problems. It is wonderful to have someone with Lynn's insight to guide us.

I first met Lynn when she had taken on the task of creating a place for animal behavior professionals to get continuing education and certification. As I talked with Lynn, I was taken by her philosophy and vision: the combination of the dream and the where-with-all to make something of it. When I was able to meet Lynn in person, what struck me first was her kind nature which is finding a voice in her commitment to helping dogs and people have better lives—something I have also devoted my life's work to. It is always so very pleasing and validating to know someone who can articulate those points that are near and dear to our hearts.

I love this book. It will have a prominent place on my bookshelf - to be used as reference, inspiration and to be lent to those whom I am certain will return it to me! Lynn tackles tough subjects that face animal professionals in current times and does so in a logical and professional manner, with honesty. Her message of a professional attitude, tolerance and ethics is an important one."
